INTRODUCTION

Despite being recognized as the best way to feed an infant due to its immense health benefits to both the mother and the baby, it is quite common to see many women discontinue breast feeding before the recommended six month period of exclusive breast feeding of the baby due to some common problems often encountered during breastfeeding which may interfere with their ability to breast feed. Yet with proper guidance, most if not all women can overcome many of these problems and continue to breastfeed as much as they like. The commonest problems often encountered while breast feeding can be divided into two major groups as follows;

BREAST DISCOMFORT AND PAIN

Breast Engorgement

Nipple hypersensitivity

Sore nipples and nipple injury

Nipple Vasoconstriction

Plugged milk ducts

Galactoceles

Breast infections

Lactational mastitis

Breast abscess

Yeast Infection

BLOODY NIPPLE DISCHARGE

Rusty pipe syndrome

Bleeding Nipples

Breast or Nipple Damage

Mastitis

Intra-ductal Papillomas

Breast Cancer
